Zenith: Finding Stillness in the Gaze

Zenith means the highest point, the peak, the moment right before things start to come back down. I named this piece before I'd finished it, which almost never happens for me, but I knew from the first few brushstrokes what I was reaching for: a single face caught at its most intense, most alive moment.

The eyes came first and they stayed the center of gravity for the whole piece. Everything else, the color, the symmetry, the surrounding shapes, exists to support that gaze rather than compete with it. I wanted anyone looking at Zenith to feel like they were being looked back at, not passively observed but actually met.

There's a kind of stillness that lives inside intensity, and that's what I was chasing here. Zenith isn't a calm piece in the conventional sense. The colors are bold and the brushwork is energetic. But if you sit with it for a minute, there's a stillness underneath all that motion, the way a held breath is still even though your lungs are full and everything in your body is ready to move.

I get asked a lot whether the face in Zenith is a self-portrait. It isn't, not literally, but I'd be lying if I said none of me is in it. Every face I paint ends up carrying a little bit of whoever I was on the days I worked on it. Zenith came together during a stretch where I was thinking a lot about peak moments, the handful of times in a life that everything else seems to orbit around. I wanted the piece to hold that same weight.

What surprised me after I finished it was how differently people read the expression. Some people see triumph. Some see confrontation. Some see something closer to grief held at its most dignified. I've stopped correcting anyone. I think that range of reactions means the piece is doing its job, holding a moment intense enough that it can mean different things depending on what you bring to it.
