Calypso: Finding a Face in the Wood Grain

Some pieces start with an idea. Calypso started with the wood.

I'd been staring at a sheet of birch panel for longer than I probably needed to, thinking about how much of the grain I wanted to keep visible and how much I wanted to cover. There's something about raw wood that already looks like skin if you squint at it right, the lines, the knots, the warmth of it. I didn't want to paint over that. I wanted to work with it.

So the face came out of negative space instead of brushstrokes. Black where the shadow falls, cream where the wood shows through, and just one color breaking the rule: a single red mark between the eyes, like a teardrop that decided to stay instead of fall. I didn't plan that mark going in. It showed up while I was cutting, and once it was there, the whole piece clicked into place. Every good piece I make has one decision like that, something I didn't plan that ends up being the reason the thing works.

I called her Calypso because the name felt like the piece looked: warm, a little mysterious, carrying a rhythm even though it's completely still. She doesn't smile, she doesn't frown. She just looks back at you, patient, like she's been on that wall a lot longer than you have.

This is one of the pieces I get asked about most in person, usually with some version of the same question: is that carved, or painted? It's both and neither, cut shapes on wood, letting the material do half the work. That's become one of my favorite ways to make something, and Calypso is where I figured out I liked doing it.
